SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball hosted their first home doubleheader of the season on Friday (Feb. 6) afternoon, taking on the UHSP Eutectics.

Evangel fell in game one after an error allowed the lone run to score, but were victorious in game two, 10-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After neither team was able to put forth enough offense to score a run in the first four innings, UHSP scored their first run when three consecutive errors allowed a runner to get on after a strikeout and score after a failed pick off and return throw into the infield.

  • Evangel had an opportunity to take a lead, as Heath Perry walked and Kannon Perry hit a single with just one out in the inning. EU was unable to capitalize in the inning, as a strike out and ground out ended the Valor threat, ultimately falling 1-0 in game one.

  • In the bottom of the third inning of game two, Nate Nunes was hit by a pitch, K. Perry worked a walk, and a triple from Quentin Edwards scored both runners to give EU a 2-0 lead. Evan Jno-Baptiste hit a sacrifice bunt to score Edwards in the same inning, making it a 3-0 ballgame.

  • Evangel doubled the lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Drew Dobberstein singled on a bunt, scoring on a K. Perry single. Edwards also singled, with Perry scoring on a error. A Cole Leonhart single scored Edwards to make it a 6-0 lead on Friday.

  • The Eutectics scored seven straight runs to take a 7-6 lead over EU.

  • Nunes and K. Perry were both hit by pitch to open the sixth inning, with Edwards hitting a single to load the bases. Baptiste drew a walk, scoring Nunes, while a wild pitch scored Jayce Walker, who was running for Perry. After Leonhart was intentionally walked, a Chance Wycoff ground out scored Baptiste, and a throwing error scored Leonhart to give EU a 10-7 lead.

  • UHSP was able to get a pair of runners on in the top of the seventh inning, but EU worked out of trouble, taking a 10-7 win and split with the Eutectics.

NOTABLE

  • Cole Leonhart went 3-5 on Friday, while Quentin Edwards went 4-6 (4-4 in game two), to lead EU offensively.

  • Jaden Anderson earned the win in game two, allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings pitched.

  • Four errors in game one hurt Evangel's chances, as Riley Fuller had a strong start for EU, pitching six innings and striking out seven batters in the loss.
