SHAWNEE, Okla. – Valor Softball concluded the NAIASB Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 21) afternoon, taking on a pair of ranked opponents in #2 Oklahoma City and #21 Hope International.

Evangel took advantage of a pair of Oklahoma City miscues in game one, scoring a trio of runs in the third inning, while Maddy Meierer kept the Stars scoreless over the final six innings of play, taking a 3-2 upset win over #2 OCU. Against #21 Hope International, Evangel would battle, loading the bases in the bottom of the 7th, but ultimately fell to the Royals after HIU scored three early runs, 3-1.

NOTABLE

  • Maddy Meierer earned the win over Oklahoma City, striking out five batters and allowing just one earned run in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oklahoma City scored a pair of runs in the first inning on Saturday, taking an early 2-0 advantage.

  • After limited offense in the first two innings for Evangel, the Valor put pressure on the Stars, as Danielle Cutbirth, Kenna Mayfield, and Naomi Perkins all hit singles, as Perkins scored Cutbirth, making it a 2-1 ballgame. A pair of errors on the Stars center fielder allowed both Perkins and Natalie Morgan to score, who had reached via error, giving the Valor a 3-2 lead.

  • In the bottom of the fifth, Oklahoma City had their best opportunity to tie the game up, but a strong throw from Cutbirth reached the catcher, Morgan, in time, nailing a runner at the plate.

  • Meierer was able to work through the final innings, as the Valor took a 3-2 upset win over the 2nd-ranked Stars.

  • Hope International scored three runs in the first two innings of play in Evangel's final matchup, as the Royals led 3-0.

  • In the bottom of the third, Morgan would score on a bases loaded walk, after getting on base via fielders choice, making it a 3-1 ballgame.

  • The Valor offense would not do much the remainder of the game, until the bottom of the seventh inning. Mayfield hit a single, followed by walks from Perkins and Morgan to load the bases with just one out. Unfortunately for EU, the Valor could not stretch across any runs, falling 3-1 to #21 Hope International.
