SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball returned home on Thursday (Feb. 19) afternoon, taking on the (RV) Ottawa Braves for a nine-inning matchup to open a three game series.
Despite trailing early, Evangel rallied, using an offensive explosion to record 18 hits and 17 runs, taking an upset victory on Thursday, 17-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Neither team scored in the first inning, but the Braves added a pair of runs in the top of the second and a run in the top of the third to lead 3-0.

Evangel's offense added six runs in the bottom of the third inning to grab a 6-3 lead. Kannon Perry was hit by a pitch, followed by a Mason Reilly double and a Evan Jno-Baptiste single to score TJ Newman, who was running for the catcher, Perry. Drew Dobberstein ripped a double to left center field, scoring Reilly from third. After Heath Perry worked a walk to load the bases, Quentin Edwards also walked to score Baptiste, tying the game up at 3-3. Cade Beshore hit a sacrifice fly to score Dobberstein, with Justus Cherrico capping off scoring with a double to right center, scoring Edwards and H. Perry, making it a 6-3 ballgame.

Ottawa quickly responded in the top of the 4th inning, scoring five runs to lead 8-6 over Evangel.

A wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth scored Baptiste, after he was able to get on base on a single, making it a 8-7 deficit for EU.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Nate Nunes ripped a home run to right center field to tie the game up at 8-8, before Reilly was hit by a pitch, scoring on a Baptiste single to give the Valor back the lead, 9-8.

Evangel extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of Ottawa miscues, as Nunes and Reilly were both hit by pitches. A D. Dobberstein triple scored both runners, with H. Perry recording a base hit to score Dobberstein, giving EU a 12-8 lead.

Ottawa added a run in the top of the eighth inning to draw within three runs of EU's lead, 12-9.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Evangel added five insurance runs, as Cherrico hit a home run to right field, followed by a Baptiste double that scored Newman and Nunes, after K. Perry was hit by a pitch and Nunes hit a single. Baptiste scored on a throwing error, while an Edwards sacrifice fly scored Dobberstein, who had gotten on via fielder's choice, capping off Evangel's 17-9 win on Thursday.
