Evangel Baseball Drops Close Battle with (RV) KWU, 3-2

The Basics

Score: Evangel 2, (RV) Kansas Wesleyan 3 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (4-8, 0-3), Kansas Wesleyan (9-1, 3-0)

Location: Salina, Kan. (Dean Evans Stadium)

SALINA, Kan. – Evangel Baseball concluded their KCAC series with (RV) Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday (Feb. 14) afternoon, looking to take a win in the series and avoid the sweep.

Evangel battled with the Coyotes and were tied heading into the final inning of play, but a walk-off at bat for Kansas Wesleyan made the difference, as EU came up just short against the (RV) squad, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After four scoreless innings from each team, the Coyotes scored the first runs of the game, taking a 2-0 lead at the end of the fifth inning.

  • In the top of the sixth, Heath Perry doubled, followed by a Nate Nunes single to advance Perry to third. Evan Jno-Baptiste hit a fielder's choice to score Perry, making the deficit just one run, 2-1.

  • In the top of the eighth, Mason Reilly and H. Perry were both hit by a pitch, with a sacrifice bunt from Nunes putting both runners in scoring position. A Baptiste bunt scored Reilly, tying the game up at 2-2. Quentin Edwards was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but an interference call on a Cade Beshore single stalled Evangel's offense, as EU could not add any additional runs in the inning.

  • Baptiste would make a great play in center field to nail a runner at the plate, putting a pair of outs on the board in the ninth inning, but the Coyotes were able to get the game-winning hit with two outs, forcing EU to fall in a close battle, 3-2.
