KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Valor Softball took part in the KC NAIA Softball Invite on Friday (Feb. 13) afternoon, taking on a pair of tough teams in Columbia and Doane.
Evangel and Columbia played a tightly contested game, as the Valor took advantage of an error to score the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh, 1-0. In their matchup with Doane, the Valor jumped out to an early lead they would not relinquish, 8-3, over the Tigers.
NOTABLE

Maddy Meierer earned the win against Columbia, allowing just one hit and striking out nine batters in the 1-0 win.

Madi Bentley earned the win over Doane, striking out four batters in the complete game effort.

Naomi Perkins led Evangel at the plate, going 3-4 with a pair of walks, runs scored, and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Evangel and Columbia played a fast-paced game on Friday morning, as both Maddy Meierer and E. Schouten (Columbia's starter) used strong pitching performances to not allow any runs in the first six innings of play.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Audrey Carlton worked a walk, advanced to second on a Lauren Dill sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored on a throwing error from the catcher to give EU a 1-0 victory over the Cougars.

The Valor jumped out early in their matchup with Doane, as Kenna Mayfield walked, stole second base, and scored on a Naomi Perkins single. Perkins came around to score on a Natalie Morgan single, giving EU a 2-0 lead.

After Evangel and Doane both did not score in the following four innings, the Valor offense exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth.

Mayfield singled, followed by a Perkins double, and a Morgan walk to load the bases. Carlton drew a walk to score Mayfield, while Dill also walked, scoring Perkins. Karli Facklam cleared the bases for EU, hitting a triple to score all runners, giving EU a 7-0 lead over Doane.

Doane scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Valor matched the run in the top of the seventh inning, when Kaylee Dolores singled and scored on a Kristyn Ramos double, 8-1.

The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, making it a 8-3 ballgame, but Madi Bentley forced a fly-out to center field, solidifying Evangel's win over Doane.
