Own Goal Proves Difference in Tough 2-1 Men's Soccer Loss to #9 Ottawa

The Basics

Score: Evangel 1, #9 Ottawa 2 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (4-3-2, 2-3-1), Ottawa (9-1-2, 6-0-1)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Coryell Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Men's Soccer hosted the 9th-ranked Ottawa Braves on Wednesday (Oct. 7) night in Springfield, looking to build after their previous contest with Bethany. An early own goal proved to be the difference as Evangel put forth a valiant second half effort against the nationally ranked opponent, falling 2-1 on Wednesday.

Evangel recorded the first shot of the game on Wednesday, as a Juyong Kim corner found Tales Ruiz for a header that went wide right of the goal. After a pair of unsuccessful corners from the Braves, a miscommunication on the back line allowed a goal for the Braves, as an Evangel pass to the keeper was errant, giving OU a 1-0 lead. Hayes Van Breusegen, Vasco Goncalves, and Kim all put shots on goal to close out the first half, but the OU keeper stopped each attempt, as the Valor trailed 1-0 at the halftime break.

The Valor came out with adjustments in the second half and played much better offensively against Ottawa's defense. At the 59:28 mark, it appeared the Evangel had found the equalizer on a corner kick from Kim to Cadu Alves, but the official called a no goal, keeping EU off the scoreboard. After a pair of red cards were issued, the Valor had to play a man down for the final 30 minutes of play. Despite only playing with 10 players, Evangel continued to fight, and sophomore Van Breusegen earned a penalty shot in the box at the 64:14 mark. Hayes would nail the shot, tying the game up at 1-1 with just over 25 minutes remaining. The Valor would continue to battle as another shot from the sophomore went wide, but ultimately with 6:18 remaining in the game, Ottawa scored the game winner, as the Valor fell 2-1 on Wednesday.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hayes Van Breusegen scored his sixth goal of the season on Wednesday.

  • Valentin Goity recorded 11 saves in a strong effort in goal against the 9th-ranked team in the nation.
