Balanced Scoring Night for EU Women's Soccer Leads to Shutout Win over Ottawa

The Basics

Score: Evangel 2, Ottawa 0 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (3-6-2, 2-2-2), Ottawa (3-8-0, 2-5-0)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Coryell Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Women's Soccer concluded their brief homestand on Wednesday (Oct. 7) evening, hosting the Ottawa Braves, searching for another three points in the conference standings. The Valor used a goal in both halves and earned a clean sheet, shutting out Ottawa, 2-0.

Evangel dominated the first half with quality chances on goal, as Eliza Barger put a shot on goal just 4:25 into the game. After holding Ottawa on defense, Makayla Myers put forth Evangel's best shot at a goal, hitting the crossbar at the 27:57 mark. The next Valor shot proved to be successful, giving EU a 1-0 lead as Dekeria Carter tipped a ball over the goalie on a Faith Joe free kick. The Valor defense held Ottawa scoreless in the first half, taking a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Ottawa came out with offensive pressure, but their first three shots in the period were not on goal. Barger and McKenzie Calhoun would both record shots on goal, but at the 62:22 mark, junior Makayla Myers nailed an exceptional shot on key passes from Emma Budimlya and Carter to extend EU's lead to 2-0. The Braves pressured Evangel's back line in the final moments of Wednesday's contest, but EU's defense held strong, taking a 2-0 win in fulltime.

HIGHLIGHTS

QUOTABLE

"What a great team win! I'm so proud of how we stayed organized defensively - the ladies did a great job there and worked to earn the clean sheet. The forward movement and connection created a number of real chances. Dekeria Carter's goal was one of our focal points over the past two weeks of our runs into the box," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "The service by Emma Budimlya to Makayla Myers' finish helped provide the separation we needed to finish it out. Lili Thiessen played a very strong match this evening. An awesome team win - we are truly playing at another level now!!"
