SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Women's Soccer returned to action on Saturday (Oct. 17) afternoon, hosting the Sterling College Warriors for senior day. Despite a scoreless first half of play, the Valor netted a pair of goals in the second half, taking a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Evangel dominated the opening half of play, earning several shots on goal from Mia Semlow, but the Valor could not capitalize, as the game remained scoreless. Eliza Barger, McKenzie Calhoun, and Rylie Kidman would all record shots on goal in the period, but Sterling's keeper kept EU off the scoreboard in the first half, as Evangel's defense allowed just one Warriors shot throughout the half, 0-0.

The second half played similar to the first, as Evangel dominated the pace of play. Lili Thiessen would record three consecutive shots on goal, but still the Warriors defense would not allow an Evangel score. Just moments later, Makayla Myers broke through for EU, using a strong move to gently tap the ball in just past the Sterling defenders to give EU a 1-0 lead. Kidman added a score nearly 20 minutes later, extending Evangel's lead to 2-0 on a corner from Eliza Barger. Sterling would score a penalty kick goal late in the second half, but Evangel made sure to quell the Warriors offense the rest of the way, taking a 2-1 win on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Madison Villaronga recorded a save in goal on senior day, her first win of the year as goalkeeper.

• Makayla Myers scored her 6th goal of the year, while Rylie Kidman netted her 2nd in the win.

QUOTABLE

"What a great way to honor our seniors today.  We controlled the match throughout and created a lot of chances today. Their keeper made a number of quality saves, but we were able to convert what we needed to get the win," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "Defensively we were very strong and outside of the PK that they converted we stifled virtually all of their attack. These three points are big for us!! Well done ladies, well done!"
