Tough Second Inning Hurts Valor Baseball in Loss to Embry-Riddle

MESA, Ariz. – Evangel Baseball returned to action on Friday (Jan. 23) morning in Arizona, taking on Embry-Riddle in Mesa, looking to bounce back after a tough loss to a nationally ranked squad the night before.

The Eagles used eight runs in the second inning to push the game out of reach for Evangel, as the Valor fell on Friday, 11-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evan Jno-Baptiste hit a double to left field in the first inning and advanced to third on a passed ball with two outs, but was left stranded, keeping the game scoreless.

  • Embry-Riddle scored eight runs in the top of the second inning to take a 8-0 lead over EU.

  • Gannon Miller singled and Braiden Whitaker entered as a courtesy runner. Whitaker would come around to score on a Matthew Olson single to left field, making it a 8-1 ballgame.

  • Evangel scored an additional run in the bottom of the seventh inning, taking advantage of an error and a Peyton Gayer single to score Mason Reilly, making the deficit six runs, 8-2.

  • The Eagles scored a trio of runs in the top of the eighth inning, taking a 11-2 advantage into the final inning of play.

  • The Valor were able to load the bases to open the ninth inning, as Justus Cherrico singled, followed by Whitaker and Nolan Arnold being hit by a pitch. Cade Beshore hit a single in the infield to score a pair of runners, making it an 11-4 game with no outs.

  • The Eagles would change pitchers and strike out the following three batters, as EU fell, 11-4
