GLENDALE, Ariz. – Evangel Baseball opened their 2026 campaign and the Coach Calderone Invitational on Thursday (Jan. 22) night in Arizona, taking on the 15th ranked Arizona Christian Firestorm, looking to pull off an upset over ACU.
In what proved to be an early test against a nationally ranked squad, Evangel's pitching staff held ACU to just three hits, but could not generate a spark offensively, falling 4-1 to the Firestorm.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Drew Dobberstein worked a leadoff walk in the first inning, but was left stranded at first base after three consecutive outs.
-
Arizona Christian did most of their work offensively in the first inning, as the Firestorm took advantage of a pair of walks, a hit batter, an error, and three stolen bases to take a 3-0 lead over the Valor.
-
Evangel was able to load the bases in the second inning, as Justus Cherrico and Cade Beshore both worked walks and Chance Wycoff was hit by a pitch. D. Dobberstein earned his second walk of the night to score Peyton Gayer from third (who was courtesy running for the catcher Wycoff).
-
The Firestorm were able to work their way out of trouble in the inning, as EU trailed by just a pair of runs, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the second inning.
-
ACU added another run in the bottom of the second to re-take a three run lead, 4-1, using a base hit and a sacrifice fly to score.
-
The Valor broke through the hits column in the sixth inning, when Quentin Edwards hit a single into right field, but a double play ground ball and a strike out ended the EU threat, keeping the score at 4-1.
-
EU was unable to add any additional offense the rest of the night, as the trio of Isaac Daley, Cooper Wilken, and Hardy Dougan allowed just three hits and one earned run on the evening against the nationally ranked squad, falling 4-1 in the season opener.
NOTABLE
