Evangel Women's Soccer Drops Tight 1-0 Contest with Avila

The Basics

Score: Evangel 0, Avila 1 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (3-4-1, 1-2-0), Avila (4-3-0, 2-0-0)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Coryell Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer continued their streak of home games on Wednesday (Sept. 24) evening, taking on the Avila Eagles. In what proved to be a cold and rainy night, the Valor would outshoot the road Eagles, but could not find an equalizer after Avila scored early, falling 1-0 on Wednesday.

After being delayed forty minutes, Evangel opened the game with a fervent pace of offense. Makayla Myers and Emma Budimlya both put shots on goal that required a goalkeeper save, while a shot from Charlae Cowan was blocked. The first Avila shot was recorded in the 13th minute, but Rylee Clapp recorded a save in goal, her lone of the night. Amaura Austell nearly put the Valor ahead 1-0, but the keeper would make a nice stop of her shot. The Eagles would score on a long cross-pitch pass that found the feet of a player who was left unmarked, pushing Avila ahead 1-0. As the rain began to pick up in the first half, both offenses were limited, as Evangel recorded just one additional shot, trailing 1-0 at the halftime break.

Avila opened the second half with a shot that went wide right of the goal. Mia Gonzales was able to match the Eagles shot with a wide right shot of her own, as neither team could record many shots on goal. The final 10 minutes of play for Evangel proved to be their best offensively, as the Valor were able to record several chances at tying the game in the final moments. Faith Joe put forth an exceptional opportunity in on a free kick, striking the ball off the crossbar, nearly tying the game up. Amaura Austell and McKenzie Calhoun both recorded shot attempts in the final seconds of the game that the Avila keeper snuffed out, as EU fell in full-time, 1-0.

HIGHLIGHTS

QUOTABLE

"You know, the things I love about the game of soccer are at times the same things I detest about the game. While we played a very solid match, a single moment can turn a match in the opposite direction. That was indeed the case tonight," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "We created a number of very good chances to score, in fact we outshot them 13-5, but simply didn't put any it away. I can say with certainty I am disappointed in the result, but not at all disappointed in our play."
