Valor Men's Soccer Comes up Short in 3-0 Road Loss to #5 OKWU

The Basics

Score: Evangel 0, #5 Oklahoma Wesleyan 3 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (4-1-0, 0-1-0), OKWU (3-0-2, 1-0-0)

Location: Bartlesville, Okla. (OKWU Field)

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Valor Men's Soccer hit the road for just their second road matchup of the regular season, their first outside of the state of Missouri, facing off with 5th-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan in their conference opener. Despite falling 3-0 in full time, the Valor defense shined, only allowing OKWU a 14.3% shot to goal percentage, the Eagles second lowest mark of the season.

Both defenses played well in the first half, as neither team was able to break through on the scoreboard for the majority of the period. Franco Cuevas would record Evangel's first shot on goal at the 34:22 mark of the first half, but the OKWU keeper recorded a save, keeping EU from taking the lead. After a Jaeden Carter shot went wide of the goal, the Eagles were able to break through, scoring their first goal of the match and taking a 1-0 halftime lead over EU.

Hayes Van Breusegen and Finn Schlauch both nearly tied the game up to open the second half, as Breusegen's shot hit off the crossbar and Schlauch's shot required a keeper save to keep EU scoreless. Unfortunately for EU, this would be their final offensive shot of the game, as OKWU added a goal at the 68:51 mark and scored their final goal of the match in the final moments, forcing the Valor to fall 3-0 on the road.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Evangel recorded four shots in Wednesday's loss, including two on goal and one that hit off the crossbar.

  • Davide Marzoli and the Valor defense fought hard and earned 12 saves in the 3-0 loss.
