Kim's Late Goal Gives Valor Men's Soccer 1-1 Draw with McPherson

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Men's Soccer played host to the McPherson College Bulldogs on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon, looking to bounce back after a tough loss to #5 Oklahoma Wesleyan. Despite allowing a score at the 59:44 mark of the second half, the Valor were able to draw even with McPherson, taking a 1-1 tie in full-time against the Bulldogs.

The Valor were able control possession for a fair part of the first half, out-shooting McPherson 10-5 in the period. Despite recording more shots, the Valor were unable to find the first goal of the game, as shots from Alim Bangura and Vasco Goncalves all required saves from the McPherson keeper, keeping the game at 0-0 at halftime.

A miscommunication by the EU defense led to McPherson's first goal of the match, taking a 1-0 lead with just over 30 minutes left to play. The Evangel offense continued to fight, trying to earn an opportunity to even the score. After a foul was called, Evangel earned a free kick from 30 yards out with 17:29 remaining in the game. Evangel leading assist man, Juyong Kim, took the free kick and buried an impressive shot in the upper left corner of the goal to tie the game up at 1-1. Evangel would record just one Felipe Tupi shot on goal the remainder of the half, but neither offense could break the deadlock as both teams took a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

  • Evangel outshot McPherson, 17-14, on Saturday.

  • Juyong Kim scored his second goal of the season in the 1-1 draw.

  • Davide Marzoli earned six saves in goal.
