Valor Women's Soccer Earn Draw with Southwestern Christian

The Basics

Score: Evangel 2, Southwestern Christian 2 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (1-1-1), Southwestern Christian (1-0-1)

Location: Oklahoma City, Okla. (Putnam City North HS)

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Valor Women's Soccer hit the road on Friday (Aug. 29) afternoon, taking on the Southwestern Christian Eagles in Oklahoma. After a 0-0 tie with the Eagles last season, the Valor and Eagles again played a tightly contested match, with both teams again tying, 2-2, in Friday's contest.

Evangel got on the board early in Friday's matchup, as McKenzie Calhoun buried a shot on a pass from Sarah Wilkins to give the Valor a 1-0 lead on their first shot attempt of the game. The Eagles offense kept pressure on Evangel's defense, earning a pair of corner kicks and breaking through in the 22nd minute to tie the game up at 1-1. Neither team could muster any additional offense in the first half as both teams entered halftime in a tie.

The Valor offense was able to come out in the first 14 minutes of the second half and get another goal on the board, as Amara Austell recorded her second of the season, giving the Valor a 2-1 lead. Evangel's offense continued to put numerous shots on goal, but were unable to add any additional offense to their total. The Valor defense had stymied much of the Eagles attack in the second half, but with just four minutes remaining, the home team broke through, scoring a goal to even the score at 2-2. Austell was able to get off one more shot in the second half, but her attempt went wide right, as both teams finished Friday's game with a 2-2 tie.

HIGHLIGHTS

QUOTABLE

"I love what this team is doing and how they are playing for one another!!  After a hard-fought 90 minutes on the road, I will take a point with the draw.  One of the best parts for me as coach, is as we work through a strong non-conference schedule, I am seeing the depth of this team as a number of young players, mainly freshman, are stepping onto the field and impacting the game, in big ways. Amaura Austell netted her second goal of the season and nearly added another late," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "We will work on the final moments of managing out a game as they snuck in a goal to level it with about 3 minutes to go. That is an area that I will help us focus more on closing out matches - that's my job to help get them there.  But we can absolutely come away feeling good about our performance - it was another strong one.  Great work ladies!"
