Valor Baseball Falls in Road Battle with Sterling

STERLING, Kan. – Evangel Baseball hit the road to open a three game series on Sunday (Apr. 6) afternoon against the Sterling College Warriors, looking to take a win in the nine-inning series opener.

Evangel and Sterling played a back and forth game, with the Valor holding a 8-6 lead, heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but a five run inning for the home Warriors proved detrimental, as the Valor fell, 11-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Shane Poe walked in the first inning and came around to score on a Clay Palen triple to give EU a 1-0 lead.

  • The Warriors evened the score in the bottom of the first inning, 1-1.

  • In the third inning, Evangel plated a pair of runs on a bases loaded walk and a ground out to take a 3-1 lead over Sterling.

  • Sterling scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to trail Evangel, 3-2.

  • In the top of the sixth, the Valor again scored a run on a bases loaded walk to take a 4-2 lead.

  • Sterling scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead Evangel, 6-4.

  • Evangel used a strong top of the eighth inning to score four runs, taking a 8-6 lead over Sterling. One of the runs came on a bases loaded walk, while catcher's interference allowed another Valor run to score. Parker Ellifritz hit a clutch single to score Justus Cherrico and Poe to give EU their lead.

  • Sterling took advantage of walks that the Valor gave up and scored five runs to take a 11-8 lead over EU.

  • The Valor could not score an additional run in the ninth inning, falling 11-8 to Sterling.
