Location: Leavenworth, Kan. (USM Softball Complex)

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Valor Softball hit the road for their final road doubleheader of the regular season, taking on the Saint Mary Spires, needing to go 2-0 or 1-1 to remain in control of the top seed in the conference.

In game one, the Valor bats continued to struggle to make solid contact and recorded just two base hits, falling 1-0. In the final game of the series, the Valor found themselves in an early hole and could not muster enough offense for a comeback, falling 8-4 and dropping their first doubleheader since March when they fell in back to back games to Ottawa.

NOTABLE

  • Kenna Mayfield led Evangel with a pair of RBIs on Wednesday.

  • Autumn Nold finished with a team high two runs scored in the losses.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Valor offense struggled in game one with Naomi Perkins and Riley Johannes being the only Valor athletes to record hits.

  • Saint Mary scored on a wild pitch early in the second inning, but the one run proved to be enough as EU fell, 1-0.

  • In game two, Saint Mary jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over Evangel.

  • Evangel was able to score their first run of the afternoon in the second inning when Kenna Mayfield hit a double, scoring Autumn Nold who singled to get on base.

  • Saint Mary added three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 7-1 lead over the Valor.

  • A run for the Spires in the bottom of the fourth pushed the USM lead out to 8-1.

  • The Evangel offense had their best inning of the afternoon in the fifth, scoring three runs. Nold singled and scored on a Mayfield single with Kenna scoring on a Ellie Facklam single. A Karlie Romines single scored Perkins to make the EU deficit just four runs, 8-4.

  • The Valor could not put forth any additional run scoring offense, falling 8-4 in game two.

UP NEXT

Evangel Softball returns home to host the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Friday (Apr. 25) afternoon with games beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Valor will need to sweep or go 1-1 against OKWU to clinch the second seed. If Evangel goes 0-2 against the Eagles, the Valor will drop to the sixth seed in next week's conference tournament.
