Valor Softball Sweeps OKWU, Clinches Second Seed in Conference Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Softball returned home for their final doubleheader of the regular season, taking on the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles, needing a win to clinch the second seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

The Valor dominated in game one behind a strong performance from Maddy Meierer in the circle, taking a 8-0 run rule victory in five innings. Game two proved to be a wild finish as ultimately the Valor would take a 3-0 win in a shortened five inning game, as both teams ran out of daylight, but after the game had passed the point of being countable.

NOTABLE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oklahoma Wesleyan put a pair of runners in scoring position in the first inning of game one, but Maddy Meierer was able to work out of trouble, striking out the batter to get out of trouble.

  • Riley Johannes opened scoring for Evangel in game one, hitting a solo home run to right field to put EU ahead, 1-0.

  • In the bottom of the third, EU added three runs to their scoring total. Reagan Jenkins and Danielle Cutbirth singled, with Jenkins scoring on a Kenna Mayfield single. A Naomi Perkins groundout scored Cutbirth, while Ellie Facklam singled to score Mayfield, giving EU a 4-0 lead.

  • Karli Facklam was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a Cutbirth single to push EU ahead 5-0. A Mayfield single scored Cutbirth, giving EU their 6-0 lead.

  • Evangel solidified the 8-0 run rule victory in the fifth inning as Karli scored her sister Ellie on a single, after Ellie recorded a base hit to get on base. A fielder's choice from Jenkins scored Autumn Nold to walk off the run rule victory.

  • In game two, neither team could do much offensively. Karlie Romines blasted a home run to left field, scoring Cutbirth and Mayfield to push EU to a 3-0 lead.

  • As the day continued to pass on, nightfall quickly came and after the Valor had led 3-0 past the completion of the fifth inning, the game was called final, and EU had taken a 3-0 win to sweep OKWU.

UP NEXT

Evangel Softball heads to Branson, Mo., to compete in the KCAC Conference Tournament from April 29th - May 1st, looking to play for a conference tournament title. The Valor will compete at 11:00 a.m. on Tanger Field against the 7th seed, who will be announced at a later date.
