Mayfield Breaks Single Season Stolen Base Record, Valor Split with KWU on Friday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Softball hosted the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes on Friday (Apr. 18) afternoon, concluding their six game home stand, looking to take a win or two against a Coyote squad looking for wins to solidify a spot in the conference tournament.

The Valor used a strong performance from Maddy Meierer in game one to hold the Coyotes scoreless, taking a 3-0 win. In game two, the Valor offense grew cold, unable to score more than one run, forcing EU to ultimately fall, 2-1.

NOTABLE

  • Maddy Meierer earned the win in game one, moving to 19-3 so far this season.

  • Kenna Mayfield went 3-6 on Friday, stealing four bases to break the single season stolen base record.

  • Four different Valor athletes recorded RBIs in the 1-1 day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team could break through scoring early on Friday, with Evangel plating the first run of the afternoon in the fourth inning. Ellie Facklam doubled in the inning and came around to score on a Riley Johannes double.

  • Evangel added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning, as Camryn Casey singled to open the inning, with a Lauren Dill triple scoring Casey. Dill scored on a sacrifice fly from Danielle Cutbirth, giving EU a 3-0 lead.

  • Maddy Meierer and the Valor defense held KWU scoreless, taking a 3-0 win in game one.

  • In game two, Kansas Wesleyan got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead over Evangel.

  • The Valor were able to tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring Karlie Romines who got on base via error on a bunt from Karli Facklam, 1-1.

  • In the fifth inning, Kenna Mayfield stole second, recording her 54th stolen base this season and breaking the Evangel school record for stolen bases in a season, formerly held by Michelle Sheppard who set the record in 2019.

  • Kansas Wesleyan hit a go ahead home run in the top of the sixth and Evangel's offense was unable to respond, falling 2-1 in the series finale with the Coyotes.

UP NEXT

Evangel Softball travels to Leavenworth, Kansas for their final road series of the regular season, taking on the Saint Mary Spires for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
