SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball returned home on Thursday (Apr. 17) afternoon, opening their final home series of the season against the York Panthers.

Evangel trailed 5-0 early on Thursday, but fought to earn a come from behind walk off victory, 10-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • York plated five runs in the top of the first inning, scoring on a bases loaded single and a grand slam to lead EU 5-0.

  • Evangel responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, with Heath Perry hitting a single and scoring on a Clay Palen double alongside Shane Poe, who walked to get on base.

  • The Valor cut the deficit to 5-3 in the third inning, using a Quentin Edwards single to score H. Perry who had walked earlier in the inning.

  • Both York and Evangel scored a run in the fifth inning, as the Panthers scored on a bases loaded walk and the Valor added a run on a Palen solo home run.

  • Evangel came within a run of tying the Panthers lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Parker Ellifritz tripled and scored on a Matthew Olson single, 6-5.

  • York plated three runs in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 9-5 over EU.

  • Justus Cherrico singled to open the inning and a Ellifritz double moved Cherrico to third. Olson doubled to score both runners and a double from Jeremiah Leaming scored Olson, making the deficit just one run, 9-8.

  • After holding York scoreless in the top of the ninth, Evangel needed a pair of runs to take a walkoff win. Palen was hit by a pitch to open the inning and a Edwards double scored the runner, making it a tied 9-9 game. Kannon Perry hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Peyton Gayer to third base. With two outs and the winning run just 90 feet away, Ellifritz made sure to avoid extras, hitting a high chopper to the third baseman that he beat out, scoring Gayer and giving EU a 10-9 come back victory.

NOTABLE

  • Parker Ellifritz led Evangel at the plate, going 3-4 on Thursday with two runs scored and the game winning RBI.

  • Clay Palen and Matthew Olson both recorded three RBIs in the Evangel win.

  • Cooper Wilken had a strong relief appearance for Evangel on Thursday, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing just one run to score.
