SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball competed in their final home games of the season on Friday (Apr. 18) afternoon, taking on the York Panthers in a doubleheader, needing a win to take the series from their conference foe.
Evangel's pitching struggled in game one, allowing York to score 21 runs and ultimately fall in a marathon of a game that took nearly four hours, 21-12. Valor Baseball used a strong performance from senior Wyatt Keplar on the mound and timely hitting to take a 4-3 win in the rubber match, showing resiliency by mounting a comeback in the bottom of the sixth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
York scored three runs to open Friday's game, taking a 3-0 lead over Evangel.
-
Evangel quickly tied the game up in the bottom of the second inning, as Clay Palen was hit by a pitch and a Quentin Edwards home run made it a 3-2 ballgame. After Parker Ellifritz reached on a fielders choice, Adam Denniston recorded his first hit of the season to tie the game up, scoring Ellifritz.
-
York plated five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 8-3 lead.
-
A solo Shane Poe home run put the Valor deficit at just four runs, 8-4, in the third inning.
-
In the bottom of the fourth, Matthew Olson and Denniston both singled, coming around to score on a Evan Baptiste home run to put EU within a run of the York lead, 8-7.
-
In the top of the sixth, York added four runs to extend their lead to 12-7 over Evangel.
-
After Poe reached base on a York error in the bottom of the sixth, Palen hit a home run to move the score to 12-9, with the Panthers leading.
-
York scored four runs in the top of the eighth and Evangel responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Jeremiah Leaming was hit by a pitch, while Poe got back on base via error, both scoring on singles from Palen and Edwards to make it a 16-11 ballgame.
-
The Panthers added five runs in the top of the ninth to take a 21-11 lead.
-
Denniston was able to score one final run for the Valor in the bottom of the ninth, but ultimately Evangel came up short of any comeback, 21-12.
-
The final game of the series was much different than game two. Game three finished below two hours in length and proved to be a pitchers duel as Evangel's ace Wyatt Keplar took the mound.
-
Neither team would get a run across the plate until the fifth inning, when Baptiste hit his second home run of the day, scoring Rhett Hayward who was running for Justus Cherrico who had hit a inning opening single.
-
York would hit a three run home run that proved to be just barely in fair territory along the left field line to take a 3-2 lead over Evangel with just six outs for the Valor to work with.
-
In the bottom of the sixth, Edwards singled and Leaming walked to put a pair of runners on first and second with one out. Peyton Gayer entered to run for Edwards and Ellifritz singled to right field in what should have only loaded the bases for Evangel. The right fielder bobbled Ellifritz's single, allowing each runner to advance a base, then proceeded to throw the ball away, giving Evangel an additional base, scoring both Gayer and Leaming and pushing the Valor out to a 4-3 lead.
-
Keplar struck out the first batter of the final inning, forced a pop up that he fielded and had Leaming take care of the final out against the right field wall, taking the complete game 4-3 victory and series win.
NOTABLE
-
Wyatt Keplar moved up to second all-time for strikeouts in a career at Evangel, striking out six in the second game to earn his 264th strikeout.
-
Keplar also earned the complete game win on Friday, moving to 4-2 on the season.
-
Quentin Edwards went 5-8 from the plate on Friday to lead Evangel offensively.
-
Evan Baptiste led Evangel with five RBIs on Friday.
QUOTABLE
"I'm incredibly happy for our seniors and getting the series win. All six of them are great leaders and exemplify what it means to be Uncommon for Christ," stated head coach Sam Jones. "Overall, I thought the guys competed the right way this weekend and were relentless. We earned two great team wins with contributions all over the place. I'm really proud of my guys."
