Big Offensive Day Fuels Valor Softball to Sweep of Swedes

Location: Lindsborg, Kan. (Swedes Softball Field)

LINDSBORG, Kan. – Valor Softball traveled to Lindsborg, Kan., on Saturday (Mar. 15) afternoon, looking to earn another pair of wins in conference play.

The Valor had a strong day offensively, scoring 24 combined runs in 12-4 and 12-5 wins on Saturday, moving their winning streak to 11 games.

NOTABLE

  • Maddy Meierer moved to 11-1 on Saturday with the win.

  • Madi Bentley moved to 6-1 on Saturday with her win, throwing 6.2 innings, similar to her last appearance in relief.

  • Seven different Valor starters recorded RBIs in their wins on Saturday, as Evangel finished with a combined 30 hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team scored in the first two innings of play on Saturday, with Evangel getting on the board in the third inning of game one. Lauren Dill worked a walk and scored on a Naomi Perkins double to give the Valor a 1-0 lead.

  • In the top of the fourth inning, Evangel added five runs to take a 6-0 lead over the Swedes. Karlie Romines hit a solo home run, while Camryn Casey and Dill singled, both scoring on a Danielle Cutbirth triple. A Kenna Mayfield home run scored Cutbirth, capping runs scored in the fourth inning.

  • Bethany added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 6-2 ballgame.

  • In the fifth inning, Riley Johannes and Karli Facklam singled, both scoring on a Casey triple to right center field, taking an 8-2 lead.

  • Mayfield scored in the sixth inning on a Perkins groundout, after getting on base on an error.

  • Bethany scored another two runs in the bottom of the sixth before Evangel closed the game out with a trio of runs. Casey worked a walk before Mayfield and Perkins doubled, scoring Casey and Mayfield. A Ellie Facklam single scored Perkins, solidifying Evangel's 12-4 win in game one.

  • Bethany opened game two by scoring five runs to take a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

  • Evangel began to mount a comeback in the second inning. Johannes doubled to open the inning, followed by a K. Facklam single and a Casey double scored both runners. Casey scored on a Mayfield groundout as EU trailed, 5-3.

  • Romines singled and scored on a K. Facklam single in the third while Dill was hit by a pitch and scored on a Perkins groundout to tie the game in the fourth, 5-5.

  • In the sixth inning, Evangel scored five runs to take a 10-5 lead. Cutbirth singled and scored on a Perkins single, before E. Facklam singled and scored on a Romines double. Johannes hit a home run to score Romines to end scoring in the sixth.

  • Mayfield and Perkins both scored in the final innings, as Evangel took a 12-5 win and sweep of the Swedes, behind a strong pitching performance from Madi Bentley.

QUOTABLE

"Today was a great day for our team. The conditions were tough, but we were able to persevere," head coach Jay Halbrook stated. "I am really proud of our team for continuing to fight through adversity. It was a complete team win for the day!"
