SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Softball concluded their four game home stand on Wednesday (Mar. 12) afternoon, hosting NCAA Division II Minot State in a doubleheader, looking to take a pair of wins and extend their winning streak.

The Valor used a dominant pitching effort from Maddy Meierer in game one and generated timely hitting to take a 1-0 victory over the Beavers. In game two, Evangel fell behind early, but was able to take a win in walk-off fashion, 5-4, sweeping the NCAA D-II Beavers and earning head coach Jay Halbrook his 250th career win at Evangel.

NOTABLE

  • Maddy Meierer moved to 10-1 on Wednesday with the win in game one, lowering her season ERA to 0.33.

  • Madi Bentley pitched well in relief, throwing 6.2 innings and striking out eight batters.

  • Naomi Perkins was 2-4 in game two, finishing with three RBIs, while Karlie Romines delivered the lone RBI in game one.

  • Riley Johannes, the reigning KCAC player of the week, delivered the walk off single in game two, scoring Autumn Nold.

  • Halbrook moves to 250-168-1 in his career after Evangel recorded their 18th win of the 2025 season in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team was able to generate much offense in game one, as Evangel stranded six runners in the first four innings of play in game one.

  • Kenna Mayfield singled in the bottom of the fifth and used her speed to steal second and third base, scoring to break the 0-0 tie on a Karlie Romines single that was placed perfectly between the shortstop and left fielder to give EU a 1-0 lead.

  • Maddy Meierer and the Valor defense continued their strong play, shutting down the Beavers and ultimately taking a 1-0 win behind Meierer's complete game shutout.

  • In game two, Minot State took advantage of an early error to score a pair of runs, leading EU for the first time on Wednesday, 2-0.

  • In the third inning, Danielle Cutbirth worked a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mayfield. Naomi Perkins ripped a triple to the left center field gap, scoring Cutbirth to trail 2-1. It appeared Evangel had tied the game up on an exceptional bunt attempt by Ellie Facklam, but the base umpire ruled a foul ball, and Facklam popped out.

  • The Valor offense did not stall out, as EU scored three runs in the fourth inning, taking a 4-2 lead. Karli Facklam singled and Cutbirth worked a walk, followed by a Mayfield single that scored Facklam. Perkins singled to left field to score both Cutbirth and Mayfield, giving Evangel their 4-2 lead.

  • Madi Bentley and the Valor defense kept Minot State from scoring for a long period of Wednesday's second game, but a late rally from the Beavers that resulted in a pair of runs scoring with two outs in the top of the seventh tied the game up at 4-4.

  • E. Facklam, Evangel's top batter by batting average, opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a double, putting herself in scoring position with no outs. A Romines groundout moved Facklam to third and Coach Halbrook put in All-American track athlete Autumn Nold to run with Riley Johannes at bat. After initially trying to bunt and earning a pair of strikes, Johannes swung away and put a ball in the left center gap, scoring Nold and giving EU a 5-4 victory and sweep of Division II Minot State.

QUOTABLE

"I am proud of the different ways we are winning. I'm excited about the things we are learning about ourselves," head coach Jay Halbrook stated. "We are blessed to know and remember who we are out there for. We are growing our faith through the encouragement of blessing others."
