SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Softball hosted the Mustangs of CBC on Saturday, looking to open their home schedule on the right foot against a tough squad out of Arkansas.

Evangel was able to outhit the Mustangs in game one, but could not find a hit in clutch situations, as a late error forced the Valor into a 3-1 loss. In game two, Evangel quickly rebounded, finding the hits needed to push to an 8-2 win behind strong pitching from both Sarah Wilkinson and Madi Bentley.

NOTABLE

  • Madi Bentley earned her third win of the season in game two, moving to 3-1.

  • Evangel recorded 20 total hits on Saturday.

  • Camryn Casey went 4-5 from the plate on Saturday, scoring three runs while Karlie Romines hit a home run in game two to lead EU with three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In game one, neither team could muster much offense, as Maddy Meierer did a good job limiting Mustang runners.

  • Central Baptist would score the first run of the afternoon, taking a 1-0 lead.

  • The CBC pitcher did a good job keeping Evangel off balance offensively, as EU was able to string hits together, but none that scored any runs until the fifth inning.

  • EU tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth on a Naomi Perkins single that scored Camryn Casey who got on via a single.

  • In the seventh, the Mustangs put pressure on the Valor defense. In what would have been a single to move runners on 1st and 3rd resulted in an error, allowing both runners to score and give CBC a 3-1 lead in game one.

  • The Valor were able to get the game winning run at the plate with a pair of outs, but could not find the clutch hit needed, falling 3-1.

  • In game two, Evangel scored early, using a Naomi Perkins walk and a Ellie Facklam single to score the first run.

  • CBC tied the game up in the bottom of the first, making it a 1-1 ballgame.

  • In the bottom of the fourth, Reagan Jenkins worked a walk and scored on a pair of doubles from Casey and Kenna Mayfield, taking a 3-1 lead. A Facklam double scored Mayfield to make it 4-1.

  • Casey singled and scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning to give EU a 5-1 lead. Perkins and Mayfield both singled and scored on a Romines home run to push the EU lead out to 8-1.

  • CBC added a late run, but the damage had already been done as the Valor took a 8-2 win.

QUOTABLE

"We played and pitched well today. I give CBC credit, they played great defense in the first game and their pitcher kept us from getting comfortable," head coach Jay Halbrook stated. "Game two was a great answer from our ladies. We are really proud of the way we responded to adversity this afternoon!"
