Late Runs Prove Costly in EU Baseball Loss to McPherson

The Basics

Score: Evangel 4, McPherson 6 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (2-12, 0-6), McPherson (10-7, 5-1)

Location: Ozark, Mo. (Ozark Mountain Sports Complex)

OZARK, Mo. – Evangel returned to Ozark on Monday (Feb. 24) evening, concluding their three game series with McPherson on a chilly, clear night in the Ozarks.

Evangel and McPherson battled and held a tied game until the seventh inning when McPherson scored a pair of runs to take a 6-4 lead that they held to the end.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • McPherson got on the board early in game one, scoring a run on a base hit and hitting a three run home run to take a 4-0 lead over the Valor.

  • Evangel scored a run in the bottom of the second as Evan Baptiste singled, followed by a Matthew Olson single and a pair of hit batters scored Baptiste, making it 4-1.

  • In the bottom of the third, the Valor would tie the game up as Heath Perry, Clay Palen, and Quentin Edwards all doubled, followed by a Jeremiah Leaming single to make it a 4-4 ballgame.

  • Neither team scored again until the top of the seventh inning when McPherson scored a pair of runs to take a 6-4 lead.

  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, both Palen and Baptiste got on base, but EU could not get any runs across, falling 6-4 in their loss to McPherson.

QUOTABLE

"As a team, we are going to continue to fight to get better every day. I still believe our best baseball is ahead of us. Much like life, the game of baseball throws a lot of adversity at you," head coach Sam Jones stated. "We are learning important lessons about how to respond to adversity that our guys will be able to take with them for the rest of their lives."

NOTABLE

  • Evan Baptiste led EU at the plate, going 2-4.

  • Four Valor athletes recorded an RBI in the loss.
