SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball opened a three game series with the Bethany College Swedes on Friday (Feb. 28) afternoon, looking to take a win in the series opener.

Evangel and Bethany battled early, but a string of errors in the fourth inning gave the Swedes a five run lead, as the Valor fell on Friday in eight innings of play, 19-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bethany hit a pair of solo home runs in the top of the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead on a windy day.

  • The Valor were able to match Bethany's runs in the bottom of the inning, as five batters were given free bases on walks and hit by pitches, with Peyton Gayer and Parker Ellifritz coming across to score in the inning.

  • An error in the fourth inning kept play alive for the Swedes, as Bethany scored five unearned runs to take a 7-2 lead over EU.

  • In the bottom of the fourth, Shane Poe worked a walk and Clay Palen singled, as both came around to score on a Quentin Edwards triple to right field, drawing EU to a 7-4 deficit.

  • Bethany added a pair in the fifth inning, taking a 9-4 lead.

  • Home runs in the sixth and seventh innings for the Swedes made it a 14-4 ballgame, with Evangel needing a run in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game alive.

  • Kannon Perry and Cole Leonhart both walked to open the bottom of the seventh and a Poe single scored Ellifritz, who had come in to run for Perry. Heath Perry and Edwards both singled to score Leonhart while an Evan Baptiste sacrifice fly scored Poe, making it a 14-7 ballgame.

  • Bethany took advantage of several walks in the eighth inning, scoring five runs to lead 19-7.

  • The Valor fought again to try and keep the game alive, scoring a pair of runs on an error in the bottom of the eighth, but EU could not find the final run to escape the run rule, falling 19-9.
