SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – On yet another cold and rainy day, the Evangel Men's Soccer team took to the field, this time to take on the Saint Mary Spires. Looking to keep their season alive with a win, the Valor would heat up the field, scoring four goals en route to a 4-2 win over Saint Mary.

Evangel got things started early on Wednesday, controlling both the pace and physicality of play. A pass across the pitch found Joao Sa in the 14th minute, who made a nice move to score a goal over the heads of several defenders, putting EU ahead 1-0. Hayes Van Breusegen added a goal just 13 minutes later on a nice pass from Andrea Fincato, extending Evangel's lead to 2-0. The barrage continued in the first half, as Sebastian Molina kicked a corner that found Franco Cuevas, who buried the third goal of the half. Evangel would allow a goal just minutes later, but led 3-1 at the halftime break.

Andrea Fincato decided an assist was not enough for his night, so the Senior scored on an exceptional kick to re-give Evangel a three score lead, 4-1. Saint Mary again responded with a goal, but the Evangel defense was able to lock the Spires down, not allowing another goal in the 4-2 victory on Wednesday to keep their season alive.

QUOTABLE

"Our guys played so great tonight! Over the last three games, our team has played the most complete of the entire year. We have come together at just the right time and are playing really smart soccer," stated head coach Kyle Beard. "I am so proud of our guys and how they stepped up to this level as a team!"

HIGHLIGHTS

• Hayes Van Breusegen scored his team leading seventh goal of the season in the win.

• Andrea Fincato recorded his fourth goal of the season, while Joao Sa scored his second. Franco Cuevas scored his first goal of the year in the win.

UP NEXT

Valor Men's Soccer concludes their regular season schedule on Saturday (Nov. 1) evening in Hillsboro, Kan., against the Tabor College Bluejays at 7:30 PM. With a win or draw, Evangel will earn their first ever bid to the conference tournament. A loss will end the season, dependent upon results from other conference teams.
