SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer hosted the Saint Mary Spires for their final home matchup of the season, looking to earn a win on a cold night in Springfield. Mistakes on corner kicks proved to be the difference on Wednesday, as Saint Mary scored two goals in the first half, resulting in a 2-0 loss to the Spires.
Evangel outshot Saint Mary in the first half, recording seven shots to the Spires four. Ava Campbell and Makayla Myers both recorded shots early on in the game that required saves from the Saint Mary goalkeeper. The Spires would net their first goal of the game on a corner when the ball was accidentally cleared into the back of the Evangel goal. The Valor continued to pressure the Spires back line, but Saint Mary held firm, scoring just before the break on another corner to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The temperature came into play in the second half as both offenses took a step back. Evangel worked to try to cut into Saint Mary's lead and McKenzie Calhoun had the best chance of the evening late, but her shot would hit off the left post, as EU fell in full time, 2-0.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
"Unfortunate result tonight. We moved the ball quite well and combined quite well. I do like how as a group we adjusted to the switch of formation to try and chase a goal. While we created chances, we just didn't connect at the right moment to get a ball in the back of the net.," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "We will finish out the regular season at Tabor and find out from there where our quarterfinal matchup will take place as we did clinch a spot in the postseason tonight."Â
