SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer concluded their home stand on Wednesday (Oct. 15) evening, hosting the Southwestern College Moundbuilders, looking to get out of a logjam in the conference standings. Evangel would net a pair of goals, taking a 2-0 shutout victory on Wednesday to move into a tie for fifth in the conference standings.
Evangel and Southwestern both recorded shots to open the first half, but at the 12:41 mark, McKenzie Calhoun got the ball over to Amaura Austell who netted her seventh goal of the season, giving Evangel a 1-0 lead early in Wednesday's match. The EU defense showed they were not vulnerable, denying all attempts that Southwestern had in the period, maintaining a 1-0 lead at the halftime break.
Austell nearly netted her second goal of the game to open the half, but Southwestern was able to make a strong save. It appeared that Calhoun scored a goal on the rebound of Austell's shot, but the officials waved off the goal and the lead remained 1-0. Despite not having the added goal, Evangel continued to fight, stifling the Moundbuilder attack and ultimately earning another goal on the night when a slow roller from Makayla Myers found the lower left hand corner of the goal, extending the lead to 2-0. EU maintained their lead to the finish, 2-0, in a shutout win over Southwestern.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
"What a great team win this evening. We moved the ball so effectively and created a number of quality chances and it was awesome to be able to convert them into two incredible goals," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "Defensively we were very good this evening and stifled their attack. After garnering her first win in goal on Saturday, Madison Villaronga claimed her first clean sheet of her career tonight. I'm very proud of these ladies!!"Â
