Austell Scores Pair of Goals as EU Women's Soccer Defeats York

The Basics

Score: Evangel 3, York 2 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (5-6-1, 3-4-0), York (1-9-2, 1-5-1)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Coryell Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer returned home after a physical match with Ottawa, hosting the York Panthers. Missing several key starters, the Valor Women's Soccer team rallied and took a 3-2 victory at home against York, behind a pair of goals from Amaura Austell.

York opened Saturday with strong offensive play, putting forth shots and scoring the first goal of the game, taking a 1-0 lead on a ball that rolled into the lower right hand corner of the goal. Evangel responded less than five minutes later, as Amaura Austell scored her first goal of the afternoon, on a similar shot the York's that scored, this one on the left side of the goal. 12 minutes later, McKenzie Calhoun broke through to give EU a 2-1 lead, scoring on a pass from Faith Joe on a free kick. Austell displayed her speed on her final goal of the day, driving past the York defense and scoring from 32 yards away to extend Evangel's lead to 3-1. York responded by scoring another goal just before the halftime break, as EU led 3-2 at the halfway point.

The Evangel defense kept pressure on York's offense, keeping the Panthers from scoring in the second half. York's best opportunity came early in the second half, but EU made sure that the Panthers could not find the equalizer, as Evangel came away with a 3-2 victory on Saturday over York.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amaura Austell scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season in the 3-2 win.

  • McKenzie Calhoun added her third score of the season in the first half.

  • Madison Villaronga earned the win in goal, the first of her career, and recorded four saves in the win.

QUOTABLE

"Today was the epitome of converting chances and then managing for the win. We created some very good attacking opportunities that Amaura Austell and McKenzie Calhoun were able to convert and those three goals were sufficient," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "I'm very proud of how we defended overall, especially in the second half as York pressed to equalize. Congratulations to Madison Villaronga as she earned her first collegiate win as a goalkeeper! Great team win to round out the week!"
