SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Volleyball opened their busy home slate on Tuesday (Sept. 3) evening, playing host to the Stephens College Stars in the Ashcroft Center.
The Valor would not be denied a win in their home opener, dominating from start to finish, en route to a 3-0 sweep of Stephens.
Leading by just a point to open the set, 5-4, Evangel's offense took off, going on a 15-1 run to take a 20-5 lead in the game. Deryan Simpson and Vivianna Sanchez did most of the work early in the set, but an impressive four consecutive aces for Bella Wakley helped Evangel shut out the Stars in a 25-10 victory in set one.
The Stars hung around in the beginning of set two, trailing by just four points midway through the set, 13-9, but kills by Loran Pritchett and mistakes by the Stephens offense helped push the Valor to a 25-13 win in the second set.
The final set of the evening was the most competitive, as Stephens trailed by just one, 11-10. Although the Stars kept it just a three point game at 16-13, Evangel's defense took over to end the match, as a multitude of blocks put pressure on the Stars offense and helped fuel a 9-3 Valor run that proved to be the difference, as EU took a 25-16 win in the final set to sweep Stephens.
