OTTAWA, Kan. – The Evangel football team rushed its way to a 27-14 victory Saturday afternoon at Ottawa University to move to 4-0 on the season. Evangel also continues its KCAC unbeaten streak since joining the league last season.
The 17th-ranked Valor jumped out to an early lead and controlled the game on both sides of the ball as a three-touchdown performance from
Eric Williams and five takeaways propelled EU in the win.
Williams punched in his first score from 3-yards out as the Valor marched 74 yards in 10 plays. The score came after both teams battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the first quarter.
Evangel would add a 23-yard field goal from
Jonah Edwards as time expired to push the Valor lead over the Braves to 10-0. Edwards added a second field goal near the end of the fourth quarter from 38-yards out as the senior extended his streak field goals to 7 for 7 on the year.
Four of the five Ottawa turnovers were interceptions by the Valor defense as
Erik Spring picked off the Braves twice.
Chad Phillips and
Joey Sylvester also picked off Ottawa and tallied six tackles a piece.
Bradley Myers again led the Valor with 11 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
Williams helped Evangel answer an Ottawa touchdown with 5:01 left in the third quarter before racing 42-yards for his third touchdown. Evangel briefly enjoyed a 24-7 lead after Williams' third score before the Braves answered with 10:40 left in the game to make it 24-14.
Reid Potts finished 11 for 22 for 142, while
Rafe Darter caught five passes for 56 yards.
Evangel held the Ottawa to exactly 100 yards rushing in the win.
