Valor Baseball Takes Upset Victory over #19 OKWU on Tuesday

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Valor Baseball hit the road on Tuesday (Apr. 9) afternoon, taking on the 19th ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles in a single nine-inning matchup, looking to pull off the upset of the nationally ranked squad.

Timely hitting and strong offense was the final story of Tuesday, as the Valor plated 14 runs and allowed just seven OKWU runs to score, bringing home the upset win of 19th ranked OKWU on Tuesday.

NOTABLE

  • Evangel went .365 (15/41) from the plate on Tuesday.

  • Brooks Espy and Carson Sturdefant both had big days from the plate for the Valor. Espy went 4-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored while Sturdefant went 3-5 with six RBIs and a run scored.

  • Rolando Galvez earned the win on Tuesday, moving his season record to 1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oklahoma Wesleyan scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the second to open scoring on Tuesday, taking an early 3-0 lead.

  • The Valor responded in the following inning, scoring five runs on the Eagles. Arly Miller and Isaac Miller both singled and a Riley Mitchell double scored Arly. A Levi Loughridge single cleared the bases, scoring Miller and Mitchell, making it a 3-3 game. Brooks Espy singled and Carson Sturdefant singled, scoring both Loughridge and Espy, putting the Valor ahead, 5-3.

  • The Valor added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. After Taylor McLeod reached base on a fielders choice, Levi Loughridge hit a single. A Brooks Espy single scored both McLeod and Loughridge, extending the Valor lead to 7-3.

  • Evangel blew the game wide open in the top of the seventh inning. Taylor McLeod was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a stolen base. McLeod came around to score on a Brooks Espy single and Eli Cook singled to put Espy on second. A Carson Sturdefant double scored both Espy and Cook, while a Jeremy Vickers double scored Sturdefant, making it an 11-3 Valor lead.

  • The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 11-6 ballgame.

  • The Valor added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to put the game out of reach. A Levi Loughridge walk was followed by another Brooks Espy hit. An error on the Eagles defense allowed Cook to get on base and Rhett Hayward to score, who had come in to run for Loughridge. A Carson Sturdefant double scored Espy and Cook, making it a 14-6 game.

  • OKWU scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Truett Gardner closed the door on the Eagles, as EU took an upset 14-7 victory over the 19th ranked Eagles.
