SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Baseball concluded their three game series with the Sterling College Warriors on Saturday, looking to take the series win and sweep of the Warriors.
Evangel and Sterling played a close game one, needing extra innings to decide a winner. After Levi Loughridge navigated out of trouble on the mound in the top of the 10th inning, it was Brooks Espy who played hero, hitting a walk off single to take a 6-5 win in game one. In game two, both teams benefitted from big innings, but it would be the Warriors who scored runs late in Saturday's contest, taking a 13-11 win over EU.

Evangel went .411 (28/68) from the plate on Saturday.

Levi Loughridge went 5-8 from the plate on Saturday, earning two walks while driving in four RBIs and scoring three runs.

Loughridge also earned the win on the mound in game one, his second win of the season in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Sterling opened Saturday's game with a run in the first inning to take an early advantage, but the Valor responded with a run of their own to tie the game up. Isaac Miller worked a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Riley Mitchell, and scored on a Taylor McLeod single.

Sterling scored a trio of runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.

The Valor scored another run in the bottom of the second, this time on a Jeremy Vickers home run down the left field line.

Evangel tied the game back up in the bottom of the third inning, scoring a pair of runs. Taylor McLeod singled, followed by a Levi Loughridge double to put both runners in scoring position for Brooks Espy, who hit a sacrifice fly to score McLeod. A Carson Sturdefant single scored Loughridge, making it a 4-4 ballgame.

Sterling added a run in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead over the Valor, but Evangel matched their run in the bottom of the eighth inning to re-tie the game. Riley Mitchell singled and stole second, scoring on a Levi Loughridge single to make it a 5-5 game.

Neither team scored in the ninth inning, forcing extras in game one. Sterling got a pair of runners on base, but were unable to score after strong defensive play and pitching from Levi Loughridge.

Riley Mitchell was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the 10th inning. Taylor McLeod hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Mitchell all the way to third, after a heads up play from Mitchell, realizing there was no defender covering third base. After Levi Loughridge was intentionally walked, Brooks Espy came in to bat with five Warriors infielders prepared for a ground ball. Espy shot the ball over the second baseman's head to score Mitchell on a walk-off single, giving EU a 6-5 win in game one.

Both teams struggled defensively in game two. The Valor scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a large lead. Isaac Miller singled and Riley Mitchell got on base via error. Taylor McLeod worked a walk to load the bases for EU and in came Levi Loughridge to bat. Loughridge shot a ball down the left field line, hitting a double to score both Miller and Mitchell. Eli Cook worked a walk to reload the bases for EU. This time it was a Carson Sturdefant double that scored both McLeod and Loughridge, making it a 4-0 game. Matthew Olson singled to score Cook and Arly Miller doubled to score Sturdefant. An Isaac Miller double capped off scoring for the Valor as Garret Trantham, who had came in as a courtesy runner, scored to make it 7-0, EU.

Sterling responded in the top of the second inning, scoring six runs to make it a 7-6 ballgame.

The Valor used a pair of sacrifice flies from Arly Miller and Isaac Miller to score both Eli Cook and Carson Sturdefant who had both reached on singles to expand their lead to 9-6.

After Sterling scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 10-9 lead, the Valor again plated a pair of runs. Taylor McLeod walked and scored on a Levi Loughridge single, while Loughridge came around to score on a Carson Sturdefant sacrifice fly to take an 11-10 lead.

Sterling tied the game up at 11-11 at the end of the sixth inning and scored a pair of runs in the 7th inning to take a 13-11 lead over the Valor. Evangel threatened the Warriors lead by getting a pair of runners on base, but could not capitalize, falling 13-11 to the Warriors, but earning the series win on Saturday.
