SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Baseball hosted the Sterling College Warriors to open their penultimate home series on Friday (Apr. 5) afternoon, looking to continue to make a push back to .500 overall on the season.

The Valor offense continued to dominate, scoring 12 runs en route to a walk-off run rule victory over the Warriors, 12-2, where Evangel used a single up the middle from Taylor McLeod to score Isaac Miller from second base in the seventh inning.

NOTABLE

  • Evangel went .400 (12/30) from the plate on Friday, hitting a clutch .571 with two outs.

  • Eli Cook and Taylor McLeod both had great days from the plate, with Cook leading the team with 6 RBIs, after hitting a grand slam in the first inning.

  • Colby Vavruska pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs to score in the 12-2 win, earning his fifth win of the season (5-4).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After holding the Warriors scoreless in the top of the first inning, it appeared the Valor also would go down scoreless, but clutch two out hitting proved to be the difference. With a pair of outs, Taylor McLeod doubled to left center field. Levi Loughridge was hit by a pitch and a passed ball allowed both runners to advance a base. Brooks Espy worked a walk to load the bases for Eli Cook, who blasted a deep fly ball to left center field, giving EU a 4-0 lead on the grand slam.

  • In the third inning, Riley Mitchell was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and advanced to third and home on a pair of flyouts from Taylor McLeod and Levi Loughridge to make it a 5-0 Valor lead.

  • Sterling broke open their scoring column in the top of the fifth inning, adding a run to their total to make it a 5-1 game.

  • Evangel responded in the bottom of the fifth inning by scoring four runs. Taylor McLeod singled and Levi Loughridge worked a walk, both advancing a base on a wild pitch. Brooks Espy reached base on an error, scoring McLeod and an Eli Cook single scored Loughridge. A sacrifice fly from Carson Sturdefant scored Espy and a pinch hit at bat from Jeremiah Leaming resulted in a double, scoring Cook to give EU a 9-1 lead.

  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Valor added a pair of runs. Riley Mitchell displayed his speed, hitting a triple and scoring on a Taylor McLeod sacrifice fly. Jeremy Vickers followed the score by singling to right center field, stealing second base, and scoring on a Eli Cook double down the left field line to give the Valor an 11-1 lead.

  • Sterling scored a run in the top of the seventh to avoid the early run-rule, 11-2.

  • Evangel quickly extinguished any hopes of there being an eighth and ninth inning of Friday's game by using more clutch two out hitting. With a pair of outs, Isaac Miller singled to the shortstop. Riley Mitchell was hit by a pitch to move Miller up to second base. Up came Taylor McLeod to bat and a nice hit up the middle advanced Miller to third, while a throwing error from the shortstop allowed Miller to score the walk-off run, 12-1.
