SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Baseball played host to the 19th ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Tuesday (Apr. 2) afternoon, looking to attempt to pull off a pair of upset wins against the Oklahoma squad.

NOTABLE

  • Evangel went a combined .259 from the plate on Tuesday.

  • Taylor McLeod led the team with three hits on Tuesday, going 3/4 in game two.

  • 18 Evangel base runners were left stranded on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Eagles plated five runs before Evangel was able to break open the scoring column. In the bottom of the second inning, Levi Loughridge opened the inning with a single to center field, advanced to second on a Brooks Espy walk, and scored on a Eli Cook single to right center field, making it a 5-1 game.

  • The Eagles plated seven runs in the top of the third to take a 12-1 lead over EU.

  • Evangel responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Matthew Olson and Arly Miller both recorded base hit singles to open the inning. Olson scored on a passed ball that advanced Garret Trantham, who was courtesy running for Miller, to third. An Isaac Miller single up the middle scored Trantham, making it a 12-3 game, in favor of OKWU.

  • After the Eagles scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth, the Valor added a run in the bottom of the sixth. Carson Sturdefant doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Matthew Olson sacrifice fly. This was Evangel's final run of the game as the Valor could not get any additional offense going, falling 22-4 in seven innings of play.

  • Neither team scored any runs in the first two innings of game two. OKWU took advantage of an Evangel error and scored four runs to take an early 4-0 lead.

  • Evangel responded by scoring a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning. Riley Mitchell worked a walk with two outs, stole second and an errant throw from the catcher allowed Mitchell to move up to third. A passed ball pushed Mitchell across the plate, making it a 4-1 game.

  • The Eagles added six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 10-1 lead over EU.

  • Evangel plated an additional run in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Eagles scored in the top of the same inning. Jeremiah Leaming reached on a fielders choice, advanced to second on a balk, and came around to score on an Isaac Miller single up the middle to make it an 11-2 game.

  • The Valor threatened the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh inning by loading the bases. Taylor McLeod doubled, followed by walks from Holton Simmons and Jeremy Vickers to load the bases. Justus Cherrico worked a walk to score McLeod and Garret Trantham hit a single up the middle to score Simmons, making it an 11-4 game with no outs. The Valor could not capitalize on the bases loaded opportunity, ultimately falling, 11-4.
