SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Baseball opened their three game series with the Avila Eagles on Saturday (Mar. 9) afternoon, looking for their fourth conference win of the year.

Despite leading early in Saturday's game, Avila was able to put forth a comeback in the late innings, scoring nine runs against relief pitching as EU fell, 12-8, on Saturday.

NOTABLE

  • Evangel hit .258 on Saturday, and were led by Riley Mitchell who went 2-3 from the plate on Saturday, with two runs scored and two RBIs.

  • Eli Cook also had a strong game on Saturday, going 2-4 from the plate with three RBIs.

  • Wyatt Keplar had a strong start for Evangel, going 5.1 innings while allowing just two runs and striking out nine batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Avila would take an early 1-0 lead over the Valor, but a four run bottom of the first inning would give EU a 4-1 lead. Riley Mitchell and Taylor McLeod would both walk and a single by Levi Loughridge would score Mitchell. Eli Cook would come to the plate and blast a three run home run to right field to make it a 4-1 game.

  • Isaac Miller would triple to left center field to open the bottom of the fifth inning. Riley Mitchell would work a walk and steal second, forcing an Avila error that scored Miller. Mitchell would come around to score on a Brooks Espy single to center field, making it a 6-1 game.

  • Avila would score a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-3 ballgame, but again the Valor would respond. Matthew Olson would get on base with a fielders choice and Isaac Miller would work a walk, both scoring on a Riley Mitchell triple to make it an 8-3 game.

  • Evangel's bullpen would struggle in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing Avila to score nine combined runs to take a 12-8 lead over the Valor.

  • Evangel's offense could not respond to the Eagles offensive explosion, falling on Saturday, 12-8.
