SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Baseball concluded their three game series with the Saint Mary Spires on Saturday (Mar. 30) afternoon, looking to take a pair of wins after a dominant Friday victory over the Spires.
The Valor offense put forth a dominant display, scoring 22 combined runs on Saturday, in a continuation of a strong performance on Friday. In game one, despite trailing early 4-0, the Valor worked a comeback, scoring 10 runs to take a 10-6 win over the Spires. In game two, the Evangel offense got hot as the game went on, scoring 12 runs behind a strong performance from Isaac Daley on the mound to take a 12-1 win and sweep of the Spires.

Evangel went a combined .383 (23/60) from the plate on Saturday.

The conference leader in batting average, Riley Mitchell, had a strong day at the plate, going 4/6 (.667) with five runs scored and three RBIs.

Truett Gardner earned the win on the mound in game one, moving to 2-0 this season, while Isaac Daley earned his fourth win of the season to move back to .500 (4-4).
HOW IT HAPPENED

Saint Mary took advantage of a pair of errors in the first inning, as they were able to hit a double with the bases juiced to score all runners, taking an early 4-0 lead.

The Valor offense nearly caught back up with the Spires in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs. Riley Mitchell got the offense started with a double down the right field line, followed by a double down the left field line from Taylor McLeod to score Mitchell. Levi Loughridge muscled the ball over the right center field fence to score McLeod, making it a 4-3 game, in favor of USM.

Evangel tied the game up at 4-4 in the bottom of the second. Carson Sturdefant doubled to right center field and scored on a Jeremy Vickers single to tie the game.Â

The Valor put up a four spot in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eli Cook doubled to left field, and scored on a Jeremy Vickers sacrifice fly. Matthew Olson, who had gotten on base via error, scored on another USM error, making it a 6-4 lead for EU. Riley Mitchell blasted a ball over the right center field fence to make it a 8-4 Valor lead to end the inning.Â

Evangel added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Isaac Miller singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a Riley Mitchell single, and scored on a Taylor McLeod sacrifice fly. Mitchell came around to score on a Spire error, making it a 10-4 ballgame.

The Spires put pressure on the Valor defense in the bottom of the ninth, but Levi Loughridge was able to close the door on any potential comeback, giving EU a 10-6 win in game one.

Evangel opened scoring up for both teams in the bottom of the third inning of game two. After Matthew Olson doubled, a fly out and ground out advanced Olson home, putting EU ahead, 1-0.

The Valor tacked on two runs the following inning. A Brooks Espy single was followed by a Eli Cook double. Carson Sturdefant hit a sacrifice fly to score Espy and Cook came around to score on a Matthew Olson single, giving the Valor a 3-0 lead.

Evangel's offense continued their string of scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. Isaac Miller opened the inning with a double, followed by a Riley Mitchell single. An error from USM put Taylor McLeod on base to load the bases. Levi Loughridge singled to left center field to score both Miller and Mitchell, making it a 5-0 Valor lead. Holton Simmons entered the game to run for Loughridge and a Brooks Espy single scored McLeod. A passed ball and wild pitch pushed Simmons across to score and another Carson Sturdefant sacrifice fly scored Espy, putting the Valor ahead, 8-0.

The Valor offense was patient, scoring another four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Arly Miller worked a walk and Garret Trantham entered the game to run. Isaac Miller also worked a walk and Taylor Wood entered as a runner. Riley Mitchell blasted a double to score Trantham and move Wood to third. Jeremiah Leaming collected four balls to load the bases for EU. Another Spire walk, this time to Holton Simmons scored Wood in the inning. Jeremy Vickers ripped a single to left field to score Mitchell and an Adam Denniston fielder's choice allowed Jeremiah Leaming to score, putting the Valor ahead, 12-0 in the game.

USM scored a run in the top of the seventh inning, with Will Foster putting the game to rest by recording the final out behind Daley's 6 and 2/3rds of work, taking a 12-1 win and sweep of the Spires.
