HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Evangel struck early, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Valor would use clutch at-bats with two outs to start the offensive push. Taylor McLeod smoked a comebacker at the pitcher to get on first and a Levi Loughridge double to right field scored McLeod, making it a 1-0 game. Brooks Espy singled to left field to score Loughridge, pushing EU out to the 2-0 lead.
-
Matthew Olson opened the bottom of the second inning with a single to left field and advanced to third on an Isaac Miller double. Riley Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to score Olson, giving EU a 3-0 lead.
-
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth inning. Levi Loughridge singled to center field, followed by a Brooks Espy single up the middle that pushed Loughridge to third base. With runners on the corners, Eli Cook hit a sacrifice fly to score Loughridge, followed by a Carson Sturdefant double to left field that advanced Espy to third base. A hard hit single up the line that was swatted down by the third baseman scored Espy, making it a 5-0 EU lead.
-
Saint Mary scored in the top of the sixth to make it a 5-1 game, but the run sparked something in the Valor offense as EU responded with eight runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Isaac Miller singled to open the inning and Riley Mitchell was able to get on base via an error. With Miller and Mitchell both going for a double steal, the catcher's throw would wind up errant, going all the way to the left corner of the field, scoring both Miller and Mitchell. Taylor McLeod doubled immediately after and scored on a Levi Loughridge single to left field. Eli Cook followed the at-bat up with a single and a Carson Sturdefant double scored both Loughridge and Cook. Arly Miller jumped in on the action, using a single up the middle to score Sturdefant and Isaac Miller capped off scoring in the sixth inning, hitting a two-run bomb to left center field, making it a 13-1 EU lead over the Spires.
-
The Spires made some noise in the top of the seventh inning, but Cooper Wilken was able to work out of trouble, solidifying Evangel's 13-2 victory on Friday.
