SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Softball played host to the Friends Falcons on Wednesday (Mar. 27) evening, looking to continue their strong play in conference.
The Valor would carry a one run lead for the majority of game one, but timely hitting by the Falcons would force extras, where Friends would score their runner from second while Evangel would not, as the road team took the win in game one, 3-2. In game two, it would be Evangel who would use timely hitting to take the victory, using a walk-off pinch hit at bat from Phoebe Gardner to take the win, 4-3.
NOTABLE
-
Evangel hit just .183 on the day, but was able to use strong defense and pitching to keep game one close and take the win in game two.
-
Maddy Meierer took the win in game two, moving her overall record to 6-1 this season in the circle.
-
Phoebe Gardner's pinch hit at bat would result in her ninth hit of the season, scoring Annslee Leeviraphan to give the Valor a 4-3 win in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
In game one, the Falcons were able to get on the board early, working walks to load the bases and scoring a run on a bases loaded walk, to take a 1-0 lead.
-
Evangel responded in the bottom of the first to tie up the game. Kenna Mayfield would single and advance to second on a throwing error. Mayfield would then advance to third on a fly out and score on a sacrifice bunt from Daizie Riggs to tie the game at 1-1.
-
Neither team would score until the fourth inning when Evangel's Megan Stone would power a ball over the left field fence to put EU ahead, 2-1, over the Falcons.
-
The Falcons would get down to their last out in the seventh inning with a runner on second base, but back to back singles would score the runner, tying the game up at 2-2 and forcing extra innings.
-
Friends would score their runner from second, using a sacrifice bunt and flyout to take a 3-2 lead. Evangel would move Naomi Perkins to third in the bottom of the eighth on a stolen base, but Perkins would be picked off of third after a missed bunt, erasing any threat from the Valor as Friends took the win, 3-2, in eight innings.
-
Neither team would score early in game two, with Evangel cracking open the scoreboard in the third inning. After Kenna Mayfield hit a lead off triple to right center field, Mayfield would score on an Annslee Leeviraphan sacrifice fly to give EU a 1-0 lead.
-
Friends would score three unanswered runs, two in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.Â
-
In the bottom of the sixth, Evangel's offense would generate action. After Daizie Riggs worked a walk and Keeley Aaron entered to run, Megan Stone would single to move Aaron to second. Naomi Perkins would work a walk to load the bases and Friends would walk Lauren Dill with the bases loaded to make it a 3-2 Friends lead. The Valor would then take advantage of a dropped pop fly in the shallow outfield to score the game tying run, making it a 3-3 game, heading into the final inning.
-
After Meierer forced the Falcons into a three up, three down inning, Evangel found their clutch hitting. Annslee Leeviraphan worked a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs, Coach Jay Halbrook called upon pinch hitter, Phoebe Gardner, to come in for the pressure packed at bat. Gardner would find a ball to hit and at first glance, it appeared the ball may tail foul, but ultimately, the ball would land just inside of the right field foul line, scoring Leeviraphan from second and giving the Valor the walk-off 4-3 victory and split with the Falcons on Wednesday.
