Valor WBB Puts Forth Dominant Offensive Showing in Win over York

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- After falling to Kansas Wesleyan on Wednesday (Jan. 31) evening in a narrow three-point loss, Evangel Women's Basketball took on the York Panthers in their final home game of a two game home stand. The Valor exploded offensively, scoring 98 points in a dominant home victory over the Panthers, 98-65.

The Valor came out firing to open Saturday's game, shooting 55.4 percent and forcing 10 York turnovers to race out to a 26-10 lead. Micah Clayton dominated in the post in the first quarter, scoring nine points, as the York defense had no answer for her offensive attack. 20 of Evangel's points came in the paint in the quarter.

Evangel continued their strong offense in the second quarter, but the York offense would also begin to heat up from the floor. York shot just under 50 percent in the quarter from the floor, scoring 21 points, but the Valor would again outscore the Panthers, putting up 23 total points in the quarter, led by six points from Kamie Jenkins. Evangel would take a 49-31 lead into the halftime break.

If you thought Evangel's first half offense was impressive, the Valor continued to improve their shooting, into the third quarter. EU scored 34 points in the third frame, dominating the Panthers from the floor. Carson Dillard had a strong quarter, hitting three three pointers and scoring 11 points to lead the Valor. With 2:14 remaining in the quarter, a Kate Denton jumper put the Valor ahead, 80-39, giving EU a 41-point lead. EU led, 83-46, at the end of the third quarter.

The Valor coasted to victory in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 points with seven coming from Sarah Lwambo in the paint. EU once again was able to take a 41-point lead, this time on a Denton three pointer, matching their largest lead of the evening as the ladies captured a 98-65 victory over the York Panthers.

QUOTABLE 

"Lots of energy today. We were aggressive offensively pushing the ball. Defensively, it was great to see us force 10 turnovers in the first quarter and 15 at half," stated Head Coach Jim Middleton. "Micah played much better today at both ends and got us going early on to set the tempo. It was just the type of game we needed today!"

NOTABLE 

  • Micah Clayton scored 21 points in the win, pulling down a team high eight rebounds.

  • Carson Dillard and Lydia Babirye both recorded double digit scoring for the Valor on Saturday, scoring 18 and 12, respectively.

  • Evangel forced 25 York turnovers on Saturday, scoring 30 points off turnovers.

  • The Valor outrebounded York, 54-38, in Saturday's win.
