KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Valor Softball opened their 2024 campaign on Monday (Feb. 19) afternoon, taking on the Columbia College Cougars and Missouri Valley Vikings in Kansas City.
A strong offensive performance in game one, specifically from freshman Daizie Riggs who hit two home runs while driving in seven RBIs, pushed EU to a mercy rule 15-7 victory over the Cougars. In game two on Monday, Evangel's offense would get warmed up late in the game, using seven runs in the final three innings to overcome an early Viking lead, as Annslee Leeviraphan hit a walk off to take a 8-7 win over MVC.
HIGHLIGHTS

Evangel hit .390 on Monday, eight of their hits being for extra bases.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Kenna Mayfield recorded a bunt single to open the game for Evangel, which was followed by an Ellie Facklam single through the left side. Daizie Riggs came up for her first collegiate at-bat and hit a three-run blast to left field, giving EU an early 3-0 lead.

Evangel scored three additional runs in the third inning, taking a 6-0 lead. Megan Stone singled to open the inning, followed by a Kenna Mayfield triple to right field to score Stone. Ellie Facklam displayed her power in the third inning, blasting a home run to right center field to score Mayfield, making it a 6-0 game.

Columbia exploded offensively in the bottom of the third inning, scoring seven runs to retake the lead over Evangel, 7-6.

Evangel exposed mistakes by the Cougar defense in the top of the fourth to retake the lead. After Columbia recorded two outs, Megan Stone was able to get on base via error. Both Kenna Mayfield and Ellie Facklam worked walks to load the bases for freshman Daizie Riggs. Riggs once again displayed her power, hitting a grand slam to right center field, pushing the Valor to a 10-7 lead over Columbia.

The Valor defense was able to hold Columbia scoreless over the following pair of innings, as the Valor plated another five runs in the top of the sixth inning to mercy rule the Cougars. A Megan Stone double was followed by a Ellie Facklam single, scoring Stone. A Daizie Riggs single was followed by a Phoebe Gardner walk to load the bases. Keeley Aaron, who had came in to run for Riggs scored on a wild pitch, while an error on the Cougars scored a pair of runs for EU. An Annslee Leeviraphan double scored Karlie Romines to end scoring and solidifying Evangel's 15-7 win in game one.

Missouri Valley picked up a pair of runs to open game two, as EU trailed early, 2-0.

Karlie Romines helped chip away at the Viking lead, hitting a solo home run to right field, making it a 2-1 ballgame.

MVC would score a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead over EU.

In the bottom of the fifth, Evangel scored Kenna Mayfield on a Ellie Facklam single, after Mayfield had gotten on base via single, making it 6-2.

The Vikings would regain a five run lead in the top of the sixth, 7-2, but Evangel would quickly respond with clutch hitting. Annslee Leeviraphan singled, followed by Reagan Jenkins getting on base via fielders choice. A Naomi Perkins single scored Leeviraphan and was followed by a Danielle Cutbirth base hit to score both Jenkins and Perkins, making it a 7-6 game.

Evangel's clutch hitting continued in the seventh inning as Karlie Romines singled to get on base. A drop third strike allowed Romines to advance and got Dakota Hale on base for Annslee Leeviraphan who recorded a single to left field that scored both Romines and Hale, giving the Valor a walk-off win, 8-7.

Evangel will hit the road, taking on the Central Baptist College Mustangs on Friday (Feb. 23) afternoon in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
