Valor Women's Soccer Earns Shutout Victory over York in Regular Season Finale

The Basics

Score: Evangel 2, York 0 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (8-6-3, 7-4-2), York (8-6-4, 5-4-4)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Coryell Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer returned home on Saturday (Nov. 2) afternoon, hosting the York Panthers to close out the 2024 regular season. Evangel scored a goal in each half and played strong defense to take a 2-0 win over the Panthers and earn their eighth shutout of the year, the most in a single season of Evangel Women's Soccer history.

York controlled the offensive pace to open the first half, recording several shots, including some on goal, but strong stops from Rylee Clapp and the Valor defense kept York off the scoreboard in the first half. The Valor found an opportunity at the 28:06 mark when Makayla Myers was fed a ball from Anna Crain, as Myers raced up the field and scored in the bottom of the left side of the goal to put EU up, 1-0. Alece Hershey and Dajah Boykin both recorded shots in the first half, but none scored as the Valor led, 1-0, at the halftime break.

The Panthers continued to record shots in the second half, but more strong defense from Evangel kept York from getting on the scoreboard. A pass from Ava Campbell found Alece Hershey in the final eight minutes of play, as Hershey made a strong play on the ball to put the Valor ahead, 2-0, and solidified the win for Evangel in their final regular season match of the year.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Evangel was outshot, 14-7, but capitalized on their opportunities in the win.

  • Makayla Myers scored her third goal of the season while Alece Hershey added her second.

  • Ava Campbell and Anna Crain both recorded assists in Saturday's win.

  • Evangel recorded six corners, one more than York's in the game.

QUOTABLE

"What a match! Our ladies played brilliantly throughout the match, while our passing, movement, and connection while in possession was some of the best we have seen this season. We defended very well again, our backline was impressive, and Rylee Clapp set a new standard for clean sheets in a season!" Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "Both goals today were incredible, but our second one was Sportscenter worthy! Now, we just wait to see who we play in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. What a great way to finish out our regular season. Valor Up!!"
