SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Men's Soccer played host to the Southwestern College Moundbuilders on Wednesday (Oct. 23) evening, looking to pick up crucial points in conference play and move up the conference standings. A late goal in the final moments of Wednesday's game proved detrimental to Evangel's chances, as the Valor, who fought hard all game, fell by a narrow 1-0 margin.

Evangel and Southwestern played a tightly contested first half, as neither team was able to score. The best opportunity for Evangel came late in the period, as the Valor defense had consistently held the Moundbuilders from scoring. Micah Siems worked and had an opportunity at a header in the final minutes of the first half, but the Southwestern keeper made a strong save to keep EU off the scoreboard, as both teams took a 0-0 tie into the halftime break.

Evangel had several strong opportunities at goal in the second half. Momentum felt like it had shifted the way of the Valor in the half, as Eneh Chibuzor, Moritz Hofmeyer, and Ruben Gonzalez all had strong attempts at goal, all of which were either stopped by the Southwestern keeper or went just wide of the goal. In the final minute of the match, Southwestern put forth their strongest attack of the night. After earning a corner in the final thirty seconds, a controversial shot by the Moundbuilders went into the back of the net, giving Southwestern a 1-0 lead with just 20 seconds remaining. Evangel could not put forth an attempt in the final moment, falling by a narrow 1-0 margin.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 10 different Valor athletes recorded shots in the loss.

  • Ryan Garner finished with a pair of saves in goal.
