BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Valor Women's Soccer traveled to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on Wednesday (Oct. 16) evening, taking on the nationally ranked #9 Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles, looking to pull off the upset. Evangel fought hard, but ultimately fell to the home squad, 2-0.
Evangel knew from the start that defense would be key against a tough Oklahoma Wesleyan offense. The Valor were able to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard to open the half, but could not put any strong offensive chances together. Eventually, OKWU put their first shot in the back of the net, taking a 1-0 lead over Evangel. The Valor continued their strong defensive play, keeping OKWU from adding to their lead in the first half as they trailed, 1-0, going into the halftime break.
In the second half, OKWU opened with a shot on goal that scored, putting the Eagles ahead, 2-0. Evangel continued to fight to the finish, but ultimately could not string together any shots on goal, keeping the Eagles at just two goals, but falling 2-0, in full time.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
"OKWU was every bit of the team we expected them to be. There is a reason they are ranked in the top ten nationally. I am so incredibly proud of the play of our ladies this evening. Rylee Clapp was phenomenal in goal and our defensive play against them was so good. Brooke Turner was all over the place and covered so well for us tonight," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "Even in the loss, we played an awesome match!! I am excited to be back home on Saturday to honor our six seniors before the match and continue our run towards the conference tournament."
