Box Score

SALINA, Kan -- Valor Women's Basketball hit the road to take on the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes in their first road conference game of the season on Saturday. Despite a strong first quarter where the Valor would score 26 points, Evangel struggled in the second quarter, forcing themselves to have to play the majority of the game from behind. The Valor were able to force overtime, but ultimately fell short in the extra period, 78-66.

After Micah Clayton tied the game up at 7-7 in the first quarter, the Valor fueled an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 lead over the Coyotes. Carson Dillard had a big part in the Evangel run and capped off the first quarter with an old fashioned three point play to push the Valor out to a 26-15 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Valor struggled offensively in the second quarter, scoring just seven points in the frame. Evangel would go 2-16 from the floor in the quarter as Kansas Wesleyan took advantage of Evangel's shooting woes. By the time the halftime buzzer went off, Evangel found themselves trailing, 42-33.

Evangel went to work in the third quarter to try and cut their deficit. On three different occasions, the Valor were able to cut the Coyotes lead to just four point, including at the very end of the quarter when Jazzy Kirby hit a free throw, making it a 54-50 game in favor of KWU at the end of the quarter.

Micah Clayton took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of Evangel's 13 points in the final quarter of regulation. Clayton's final point came on a free throw in the quarter, giving the Valor a 63-61 lead over KWU, but a Coyote basket with 13 seconds left would even the score at 63-63. Both teams would earn a possession after the tying basket, but a turnover by Evangel and pair of missed free throws by KWU forced an overtime period, 63-63.

After working hard to try and force a comeback, the Valor came out flat in the extra period. The Valor did not score a field goal from the floor in the extra period until there was just 1:20 remaining in the game. This would be Evangel's only field goal of the overtime period, as they shot just nine percent from the floor, falling 78-66 to the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes.
