OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Valor Women's Basketball concluded the MACU Classic on Saturday (Nov. 11) afternoon, taking on the host MACU Evangels who were 19th in the latest NAIA Coaches Poll. Despite a strong first quarter of offense, Evangel went cold from the floor, falling to the tough MACU squad, 86-58.
Trailing 6-5 early in the first quarter, a layup by Kate Gilbert followed by a Kamie Jenkins layup and Jazzy Kirby three put the Valor ahead 12-6 over MACU. The Evangels would fight back, but a three by Carson Dillard on Evangel's final possession would put the Valor up by six heading into the second quarter, 21-15.
An 11-1 MACU run to open the second quarter put the Evangels ahead, 26-22 over the Valor. MACU would outscore Evangel by 18 points in the second quarter, as the Valor began to slowly grow cold from the floor against MACU's tough defense. By the time the halftime buzzer rang, Evangel trailed, 44-32.
Every single basket that Evangel scored in the third quarter was met with a basket of MACU's own, as the Valor continued to try to fight against the nationally ranked Evangels. Despite six points from Kamie Jenkins in the quarter, Evangel found themselves trailing, 69-45, at the end of the third quarter.
Evangel shot just 17 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter, hurting their chances at a comeback against the nationally ranked MACU squad. Sarah Lwambo would score six of Evangel's points in the quarter, but the damage had been done as the Valor fell to MACU on the road, 86-58.
