ATCHISON, Kan. – After taking on a tough Missouri Valley team last Tuesday, Evangel Women's Soccer traveled to Kansas to take on the Ravens of Benedictine. The Valor struggled to produce on offense, resulting in their demise, 4-1, on Saturday night.
The Benedictine offense showed good fundamental soccer in the first half, scoring quickly on Evangel and not allowing the Valor to intercept the ball and push past midfield often. Benedictine grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 3:46 mark for the first goal of the game. The ball remained in the Ravens attacking area for the majority of the half and by the time 45 minutes had passed, EU had not recorded a shot in the period as they trailed, 1-0.
The Valor came out much stronger on offense in the second half, but the Ravens capitalized on Evangel miscues to score. At the 46 minute mark, Benedictine scored a goal to make it 2-0. Both teams continued to grow stronger over the game as at the 61 minute mark, the Valor recorded their first shot of the game from McKinley Yoder. Dajah Boykin quickly followed with a shot of her own, but it was blocked. At the 71 minute mark, the Ravens scored their third goal of the game and just five minutes later, scored their fourth of the afternoon to take a 4-0 lead. The Valor continued to fight and at the 82:44 mark, Boykin took the ball past two defenders and nailed a shot from the left side of the goal that sunk in the right corner. In the final seven minutes, Evangel created more offensive pressure, but could generate no goals, as they fell, 4-1.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
"Benedictine was every bit of the team we anticipated them to be. The challenge for us still remains the physical aspect of the game, both the speed necessary to close play down defensively and strength to win challenges around the field. We are a very good team and if we can enhance that aspect of our game we will compete at a much higher level," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "I am proud that we worked through to the end of the match and were able to score - a nice goal by Dajah Boykin. And once again, Chloe Hancock was amazing in the goal. The conference schedule was incredibly tough this first week, so we must keep that in perspective and press on!"
