COLUMBIA, Mo. – Valor Volleyball concluded the Hampton Inn Classic on Saturday afternoon with a split, taking a win against Tabor in the early morning game, and falling to the defending national champions, Missouri Baptist.
The first match of the day featured Evangel going up against Tabor, who will soon be a familiar foe for the Valor in the KCAC next season.
Set one began with both teams continually trading points. With the Valor ahead 17-16, Evangel began to pull away, thanks to a 7-1 run that consisted of excellent all-around team play. After a 25-20 first set win, the Valor kept their foot on the gas and claimed a 25-19 set win, thanks to a scorching .438 attacking percentage as eight different Evangel players scored a point in the set. The Valor took care of business in set three, never allowing the Bluejays of Tabor a chance to get back in the game. A quick 7-1 run from the start of the set gave the Valor plenty of room to work and ultimately gave Evangel their second sweep of the season, 25-19.
HIGHLIGHTS
The second match of the day featured Evangel taking on the Spartans of Missouri Baptist, who are currently the top team in the nation and the defending national champions.
Evangel and Missouri Baptist traded points to begin set one and with the score knotted up at 9 apiece, the Spartans used a 5-0 run to grab a lead that they never relinquished. The Valor fought hard to narrow the first set deficit, coming as close as two points, but the Spartans ended the set on a 4-0 run to take a 25-19 win. In the second set, Evangel's offensive attack grew cold, allowing Missouri Baptist to grab an early lead. Trailing 21-13, the Valor easily could have laid down and focused on the next set, but strong determination and offense propelled Evangel on a quick 10-1 run, to come within a single point of the defending national champions. With the score in favor of the Spartans, 23-22, MBU scored two tough points to claim the second set. The Valor continued to display tenacity throughout the final set. Every chance Missouri Baptist had to break the game wide open was stopped by tough Valor defense. Ultimately, the Spartans found offense at the end of the set, claiming the victory, 25-21.
