BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- Evangel concluded the OKWU Classic in Bartlesville on Saturday with a matchup against the Eagles of Oklahoma Wesleyan. Although the Valor led for the majority of the second half, Oklahoma Wesleyan used a strong fourth quarter run to escape with the narrow victory over Evangel, 84-79.

Evangel and Oklahoma Wesleyan played in a competitive first quarter. An Emma Mullings layup gave Evangel an 11-5 lead at the halfway point of the quarter. The Eagles used a 13-6 run to take a slight lead, but a pair of Kate Gilbert free throws gave the Valor a 19-18 lead at the end of the quarter.

For the first six minutes of the second quarter, both teams traded baskets. A River Jeffries layup for OKWU knotted the score at 36 points apiece. The Valor used a 7-3 run, capped off by a Kohnnar Patton free throw, to end the quarter, leading 43-39.

The third quarter was highlighted by a 14-5 Evangel run where four different Valor players scored to extend Evangel's lead. By the time the third quarter had ended, Evangel held a nine-point lead, 63-54. The Valor shot 75 percent from three in the quarter to help fuel their run.

In the fourth quarter, Oklahoma Wesleyan grew hot from the floor and Evangel cooled off from their strong shooting in the previous quarters. The Eagles shot 75 percent from the floor while Evangel only made 27 percent of their shots in the quarter. With two minutes remaining in the game, OKWU nailed a three to take a 79-77 lead. A free throw by the opposing team, followed by a Micah Clayton layup made it just an 80-79 game, in favor of the Eagles. The Valor would have three opportunities to score in the final minute, but were unable to capitalize, as OKWU hit their free throws and ended the game with an 84-79 victory.
