OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Evangel Women's Basketball traveled to Oklahoma City on Friday to take part in the MACU Classic. The Valor took on the host school, MACU Evangels, looking to take down the nationally receiving votes team. In what would be a solid contest between both squads, the Valor came up just short of the upset, falling 80-65.

Evangel trailed early in the first quarter, 21-8, but a strong 8-1 Valor run to end the quarter kept the game within reach for Evangel. The first quarter saw seven different Valor players record points to keep the Valor close, 22-16.

Both MACU and EU played an evenly matched second quarter that saw neither team make up any ground on the scoreboard. Paiton Acord helped fuel a run to end the quarter, scoring four consecutive points to make it a 37-31 game at the half.

The Valor played their strongest quarter of offense in the third quarter, adding 19 points to their game total. Although Evangel scored 19, they were outscored by four points in the quarter as the Evangels began to separate both teams on the scoreboard. Kohnnar Patton nailed two crucial threes to help the Valor score their 19 points in the third quarter as Evangel trailed, 60-50.

In the final quarter of the match, the Valor pushed MACU to the brink, making it a six point game with just 1:19 remaining. The Evangels last 12 points all came off free throws, as they consistently hit their shots, ultimately taking the victory from the Valor, 80-65.

NOTABLE 

• Sophomore Jazzy Kirby led Evangel with 11 points in the loss to MACU.

• 11 different Valor athletes added points to the total as Evangel was able to move the ball around successfully, adding 18 assists.

• The Valor were outrebounded in the match, 60-38, leading to second chance points for the Evangels.

• Micah Clayton and Sophie Sparks both added nine points each.

NEXT UP 

Evangel will conclude the MACU Classic tomorrow (Nov. 5) afternoon at 12:00 p.m. against the Golden Eagles of John Brown University.
